What is Spirulina

What is spirulina ?

" most powerful food on earth "

Suddenly everyone is talking about Spirulina. What is it ?

Spirulina takes its name from its perfect spiral shape. It generally refers to an ancient, blue-green micro-organism or microalga, which is native to the alkaline lakes of Mexico and Africa. Today, it is the generic name used this phenomenal food with unmatched nutritional benifits.

Spirulina is a blue-green algae. It is a simple, one-celled form of algae that thrives in warm, alkaline fresh-water bodies. The name "spirulina" is derived from the Latin word for "helix" or "spiral", denoting the physical configuration of the organism when it forms swirling, microscopic strands.
It is being developed as the "food of the future" because of its amazing ability to synthesize high-quality concentrated food more efficiently than any other algae.

Most notabley, Spirulina is 65 to 71 % complete protein, with all essential amino acids in perfect balance. In comparison, beef is 22 % protein.

Spirulina is 100% natural and highly nutritious micro salt water plants. This spiral shaped algae is a rich food source. For a long time this algae has constituted a significant part of the diet of many communities. Since the 1970's, Spirulina has been well known and widely used as a dietary supplement. Spirulina Contains rich vegetable protein (60~ 63%, 3~ 4 times higher than fish or beef ), multi Vitamines (Vitamin B 12 is 3~4 times higher than animal liver ), which is particularly lacking in a vegetarian diet. It contains a wide range of minerals (including Iron, Potassium, Magnesium, Sodiam, Phosphorus, Calcium etc. ) a high volumes of Beta- carotene which protects cells (5 times more than carrots, 40 times more than spinach), high volumes of gamma-Linolein acid (which can reduce cholesterol and prevent heart disease).

Spirulina has a photosynthetic conversion rate of 8 to 10 %, compare to only 3 % in such land-growing plants as soyabeans.

In addition, Spirulina is one of the few plants sources of vitamin B 12, usually found only in animals tissues.A teaspoon of Spirulina supplies 21/2 times the Recommended Daily Allowance vitamin B 12 and contains over twice the amount of this vitamin found in an equivalent serving of liver.

Spirulina also provides high concentraration of many other nutrients - amino acids, chelated minerals, pigmentations, rhamnose sugar ( complex natural plant sugars ), trace elements, enzymes - that are in an easily assimilable form.
